The shark fishing has been as tough as we have ever seen this summer. Our usual 90% or better chance has been more like 50/50 on catching and releasing a nice shark on the fly. We are still catchin' a few, it's just not what we are used to. July and August have provided some poor water temps, fishing overall here in San Diego has been off for the city's entire fleet, from inshore/kelp to offshore/tuna, it has been a rough season so far. Some days are great, some are tough that's fishin'... it always beats workin'!

Wind and rain have slowed the local bite down the last few days. In between the bad weather, the fishing has been good for some species and tough for others. Thresher sharks, blue sharks, barracuda, yellowtail, calico bass and white seabass have been biting on the good days. But you have to be in the right place at the right time, and if you aren't on the water you don't have a chance!

Ted Roper, Cliff Wright and Cliff's 11yr old son Daniel fished two and a half days with us.
On the first day, we fished the Blackjack offshore and managed to capture 15 yellowtail (Mexican limits), 1 albacore, 6 yellowfin tuna, and 2 nice dorado!
The next day we used the scraps from the tuna they caught to chum up some sharks... It proved to be excellent bait, as we chummed up 2 monster hammerheads and a mako!
We released 1 of the hammerheads, ans lost the other one on the bottom on a ridge nearly 600 feet below! What a strong fish! Daniel battled the mako to the boat, and after a great fight we released her for another day.
On Day 3 of their trip we spent the morning in the kelp beds for a good mix of bass fishing to round out their trip.
A nice group and great fishing started the month off with a bang!

August 9 - We fished the Coronado Islands for 7 nice yellow tail and over 20 big bonita, with 3 anglers. Pics coming soon.
August 5 - Client Todd Setzer from Sacramento, CA pulled off the San Diego Shark Slam (3 species in one day)!! One of two clients to accomplish this ever with Capt. Dave! Todd landed 2 Hammerhead sharks on heavy stand up gear, estimated in the 300lb class. He hooked and landed 3 mako sharks on fly tackle (up to 150 lbs), and to round out 3 species, added a couple of blue sharks on fly rod as well.
August 1 - The shark fishing is in full swing and some big bonito are around so the average size of the sharks has been big! We still have a few available dates in August and September, so give us a call today!

We managed to release 7 out of 11 makos with a few sharks over 100lbs. Lou brought out the Tournament series Torque 18, Galvan's largest reel, and I have never seen a reel pick up so much line so fast! This reel has a 6" spool diameter and crankin' on this beast you can keep up with the rocket speed of a 100lb class mako! When you are talking about the world's third fastest fish, that's saying a lot! The sharks are in and we are booking up fast, so call today to book your trip!

This month has been some great fishing! With water temps in the mid to high 60's, and clean blue water close to the coast, both shark fishing and inshore have been hot!
We have released many blue, mako and thresher sharks this month. The barracuda fishing was as good as it gets, fish busting bait, birds working, fish boiling all morning. We caught 3' long cudas on poppers! The coastal kelp fishing for calico bass has been productive as well. Call today to book your trip!

A.M.
Joel and Mason were back at it for a morning half-day Mission Bay trip. Picking up where we left off on Sunday with flys and light tackle, we caught and released numerous yellowfin croaker, spotfin croaker, halibut, some real nice spotted bass and a sand bass.
P.M.
After I dropped them off at the Catamaran Resort, I picked up the Sight family, out from K.C. on Spring Break, for an afternoon of shark fishing. Things were a little slow to get going for Don, Logan, and Stephanie, but we managed to catch 2 out of the 3 blue sharks we saw for a nice afternoon Half Day of shark fishing. The biggest was about 80 lbs.
The weather is nice, the bay is fishing good, and the sharks are biting, so give us a call and book your trip today!

Feb 24th ReportSo far this month On the Fly Fishing Charters has had seven days on the water in the month of February. Quite a bit of bay fishing this month, and it has been HOT! The bay bass are biting great; our best day saw nearly 40 bass in 4 hours.
Feb 21rst ReportCapt. Dave's last charter was a successful day for the Morgan family, visiting from Seattle. We started in the bay for a decent bass bite, each angler catching a few fish before we headed out for some shark fly-fishing. Mr. Morgan's 15 year old daughter took the family "jackpot" with her handful of bay bass in the morning and a nice big blue shark on a fly that her dad tied!

Dustin Dean caught thisnice blue on Jan 31st 2009.
Capt. Dave ran 6 shark fly-fishing trips in the month of January. We released a total of 15 blue sharks up to 125 lbs. Unfortunately we did get skunked one day on the sharks. The fish were spread out and the weather and swells were a factor on the tougher days.
The bay fishing has been great, and should continue to be for the rest of the winter months. So, if you are not set going for the 100 pounders and just want to catch some fish and enjoy some sunshine, a morning bay trip is always a sure bet for some action.

Great fishing this week. Wednesday at the islands for 25 big Bonita, slamming the Trimble 'chovie on the 8wt and crocodile on 6lb line on the coffee grinder. A few lings and big sand bass on gear as well for a great mixed bag.
Thursday went 1 for 3 on the Thresher sharks, releasing a nice fish that was in the 270 to 280 class. Mouth hooked on a circle hook with a drop back bait, trolling hook-less bait o matics and pullin' the ol' bait-and-switch.
Friday was good sharkin' we released 13 blues on the fly, and fed the chum to another 6 as we headed into the bay for a couple of spotties to round out the day.
Saturday was the day of the Log 'Cuda. Almost every other cast on the 8wt and all you wanted on the iron. up to 36"...good times! Finished the day with 1 mako and 3 blues released to wrap up the week.

Unbelievable!! Angler Brendan Mason, fishing with Capt. Dave caught
and RELEASED
a mako estimated at 11' and roughly 600 lbs. This could be one of the largest, if
not THE largest fish ever caught on a fly!

Randall Bryett captured the event on film, and you can see the photo sequence and
read the story on the River and Reef website. Field & Stream, Salt Water Sportsman, Fly Fishing in Salt Waters, and Sport Fishing Magazine have also posted articles on the catch.
