Massive shark, local marlin release by On The Fly Fishing Charters

On the Fly Fishing Charters is Southern California’s most diverse and experienced charter service. We specialize in fly fishing and are fully equipped to accommodate conventional gear fishermen as well. Our guests are treated to top-of-the-line boats, tackle, and service to make their trip the trip of a lifetime.

Our guests have taken trophies of over 35 species, from Alaska to Panama, in both salt and fresh water. With over 2,000 days of guiding experience, our guides have what it takes to put you on world-class fish of many types on the fly.

Shark Trips!

Fly-fishing for mako sharks is a unique experience. Without a doubt, San Diego offers fly-fisherman, of all experience levels, the best opportunity in the United States to target mako sharks up to 200 pounds.

Our summertime shark fishing trips offer fly-fisherman as high of a percentage shot at an angler releasing a 100lb fish "On The Fly" as anywhere else in the country. That's right! Your odds are just as good, or better, of catching and releasing a big shark on a fly rod with us than a tarpon, sailfish or marlin over 100lbs anywhere in the U.S., east or west coast! Mako on the Nine

April 2008 - San Diego Fishing Heats Up!

Great fishing this week. Wednesday at the islands for 25 big Bonita, slamming the Trimble 'chovie on the 8wt and crocodile on 6lb line on the coffee grinder. A few lings and big sand bass on gear as well for a great mixed bag.

Thursday went 1 for 3 on the Thresher sharks, releasing a nice fish that was in the 270 to 280 class. Mouth hooked on a circle hook with a drop back bait, trolling hook-less bait o matics and pullin' the ol' bait-and-switch.

Friday was good sharkin' we released 13 blues on the fly, and fed the chum to another 6 as we headed into the bay for a couple of spotties to round out the day.

Saturday was the day of the Log 'Cuda. Almost every other cast on the 8wt and all you wanted on the iron. up to 36"...good times! Finished the day with 1 mako and 3 blues released to wrap up the week.

Inshore Fishing Trips

Available all year

Del Mar Barracuda
La Jolla Bonito
In spring and summer, San Diego Coastal / Inshore fishing provides fly-fishing and light tackle action for calico bass, barracuda, bonito, sand bass, yellowtail, halibut, and white seabass.

During these trips, we fish around the kelp forests of the San Diego coast. Trolling, drifting, looking for birds working, bait fish breaking the surface, and fishing the structure between the beach and the kelp to provide you the best opportunity to hook up with our coastal species.

Guard Dog seal
Inshore boil
Prime season on this ranges from April-November. It is dependent upon the water temperatures, which change from year to year.

In the late fall, winter, and early spring months, the majority of the inshore / coastal fishing is bottom fishing with conventional gear in depths from 80 to 300 ft.

We target lingcod, sheephead, halibut, and a variety of rockfish from November through April. Most of these fish are caught at depths too difficult to fly-fish. If you are looking for a fly-fishing trip this time of year, see our bay trips.

All trips include: All fly tackle, flies, snacks and water

Not included: Lunch, other beverages, California State Fishing License (can be purchased the day of the trip). Fresh deli sandwiches / sack lunches can be purchased at the landing on the day of the trip. Click HERE to view the Dana Landing Deli menu.

New Year’s Day Fish Report 2009

Capt. Trimble with a nice Spotted Bay Bass

Casted into the new year with a 3 hour bay trip. Joel Kantor made a little time before his flight home to experience some Mission Bay fly fishing. We had a good time. Watching birds work bait, catching a few nice bass and a couple of halibut. What a great way to welcome the New Year! Here is a pic from the morning

January 2009 Monthly Overview

Dustin Dean caught this nice blue on Jan 31st 2009.
Dustin Dean caught this
nice blue on Jan 31st 2009.

Capt. Dave ran 6 shark fly-fishing trips in the month of January. We released a total of 15 blue sharks up to 125 lbs. Unfortunately we did get skunked one day on the sharks. The fish were spread out and the weather and swells were a factor on the tougher days.

The bay fishing has been great, and should continue to be for the rest of the winter months. So, if you are not set going for the 100 pounders and just want to catch some fish and enjoy some sunshine, a morning bay trip is always a sure bet for some action.

February Report Through February 24

Feb 24th Report
So far this month On the Fly Fishing Charters has had seven days on the water in the month of February. Quite a bit of bay fishing this month, and it has been HOT! The bay bass are biting great; our best day saw nearly 40 bass in 4 hours.

Feb 21rst Report
Capt. Dave's last charter was a successful day for the Morgan family, visiting from Seattle. We started in the bay for a decent bass bite, each angler catching a few fish before we headed out for some shark fly-fishing. Mr. Morgan's 15 year old daughter took the family "jackpot" with her handful of bay bass in the morning and a nice big blue shark on a fly that her dad tied!

March 15, 2009 - Bay Trip Report

Sunday morning - Bay half day trip : Joel, Mason and I managed to land a nice barracuda, halibut, and a few spotted bay bass on a nice morning on Mission Bay with fly rods and light tackle.

March 16, 2009 - Shark Trip

What can brown do for you? Chris Thury and the U.P.S. gang, on their annual "San Diego March Madness" trip boated 4 nice blue sharks on their Full Day fly-fishing trip.

March 17, 2009 - AM/PM Half Day Trips

A.M. Joel and Mason were back at it for a morning half-day Mission Bay trip. Picking up where we left off on Sunday with flys and light tackle, we caught and released numerous yellowfin croaker, spotfin croaker, halibut, some real nice spotted bass and a sand bass. P.M. After I dropped them off at the Catamaran Resort, I picked up the Sight family, out from K.C. on Spring Break, for an afternoon of shark fishing. Things were a little slow to get going for Don, Logan, and Stephanie, but we managed to catch 2 out of the 3 blue sharks we saw for a nice afternoon Half Day of shark fishing. The biggest was about 80 lbs. The weather is nice, the bay is fishing good, and the sharks are biting, so give us a call and book your trip today!

Apr. 6, 2009

My first trip saltwater fishing with Capt. Dave Trimble was May of 2006. His experience and knowledge was obvious from the first day I set foot on the boat.

The first day we went shark fishing and succesfully released over 13 sharks! The second day we decided to fish inshore/bay and landed over six species of fish. Captain Trimble's knowledge accompanied by the quality gear, made my trip one I will never forget.

In fact, I keep coming back to San Diego to fish with Captain Trimble every year (over 25 days). In that time we have caught yellowfin tuna, albacore, dorado (mahi-mahi), striped marlin, rock fish, lingcod, mako sharks, blue sharks, skipjack, bonito, and my favorite - the tail-whipping thresher shark.

Thanks Dave - see ya soon!

April Fishing Report

April fishing gets hot! Our captains released 12 threshers up to 250 lbs and 2 nice blue sharks in 5 charters. We had almost as many on that we lost, so the action has been good and should remain to be for the next few weeks. We are booking up, so call today to reserve your boat.

May 2009 Fishing Report:

Barracuda, Sharks are HOT!

This month has been some great fishing! With water temps in the mid to high 60's, and clean blue water close to the coast, both shark fishing and inshore have been hot!

We have released many blue, mako and thresher sharks this month. The barracuda fishing was as good as it gets, fish busting bait, birds working, fish boiling all morning. We caught 3' long cudas on poppers! The coastal kelp fishing for calico bass has been productive as well. Call today to book your trip!

June 2009 Fishing Report:

Shark Fishing is Good

June 20:

Had a great day with fly fishing photographer Copi Vojta, Lou Galvan of Galvan fly reels and our V.I.P. client Mike Lapsley from Four Seasons Guides & Outfitters in Flagstaff, AZ. We managed to release 7 out of 11 makos with a few sharks over 100lbs. Lou brought out the Tournament series Torque 18, Galvan's largest reel, and I have never seen a reel pick up so much line so fast! This reel has a 6" spool diameter and crankin' on this beast you can keep up with the rocket speed of a 100lb class mako! When you are talking about the world's third fastest fish, that's saying a lot! The sharks are in and we are booking up fast, so call today to book your trip!

July 2009 Fishing Report:

Mixed Bag Sharking on Tap

Shark fishing is steady right now, with a mixed bag of blues and makos. A wide range of fish in sizes from 20 to 150 lbs has had the drags screaming on all of the fly rods from the 8 to 14wt! What a blast!

Early August Fishing Report:

Sharks, Yellowtail and Bonito Fishing are Good!

August 9 - We fished the Coronado Islands for 7 nice yellow tail and over 20 big bonita, with 3 anglers. Pics coming soon.

August 5 - Client Todd Setzer from Sacramento, CA pulled off the San Diego Shark Slam (3 species in one day)!! One of two clients to accomplish this ever with Capt. Dave! Todd landed 2 Hammerhead sharks on heavy stand up gear, estimated in the 300lb class. He hooked and landed 3 mako sharks on fly tackle (up to 150 lbs), and to round out 3 species, added a couple of blue sharks on fly rod as well.

August 1 - The shark fishing is in full swing and some big bonito are around so the average size of the sharks has been big! We still have a few available dates in August and September, so give us a call today!

Aug. 23, 2009

A First Marlin!

Hunt Hellums from Austin Texas booked a 12 hour offshore trip on the Blackjack to target marlin.

He got his wish, his first Marlin ever! We were 1 for 4 on the day the marlin he caught was over 100lbs and was taken on 25lb test!

Nice work Hunt!

Sep. 4-6

Offshore & Sharking Bonanza

Ted Roper, Cliff Wright and Cliff's 11yr old son Daniel fished two and a half days with us.

On the first day, we fished the Blackjack offshore and managed to capture 15 yellowtail (Mexican limits), 1 albacore, 6 yellowfin tuna, and 2 nice dorado!

The next day we used the scraps from the tuna they caught to chum up some sharks... It proved to be excellent bait, as we chummed up 2 monster hammerheads and a mako!

We released 1 of the hammerheads, ans lost the other one on the bottom on a ridge nearly 600 feet below! What a strong fish! Daniel battled the mako to the boat, and after a great fight we released her for another day.

On Day 3 of their trip we spent the morning in the kelp beds for a good mix of bass fishing to round out their trip.

A nice group and great fishing started the month off with a bang!

Great January Sharkin'

San Diego Blue Shark

All of our half-day and full-day shark fishing trips this year have been a success. The best day fish count was in double digits, and we released 3 sharks over 100lbs on 25lb test or lighter!

The water temps are in the high 50's to low 60's. The majority of the sharks we have released this week have been Blue sharks. They have been averaging between 40 and 80lbs, most days we get one or two over 100lbs "On The Fly"! The occasional Mako has been small and in the 15 to 25 lb class. These holdover pups are a good fight on a bass rod or a 8 wt. fly rod! We have not captured a Thresher this year, but there have been reports of some small ones being released as well.

Jan. 1, 2010:

Happy New Years!

As the new year rolls in, we are proud to offer our clients the new Sage Xi3 series rods in 6wt.-16wt., and 6000 series reels for their use on all of our fly fishing charters. As always, we offer the best new equipment for all of our guests every season!

Once again: Happy New Year!

Dec. 30, 2009:

Christmas Blues!

Winter Blue Sharks!

Mike Hodgson and his buddy John came back for some winter blue sharkin this year. They hit it good last year right after Christmass and this trip was no different! We raised just under 10 sharks on their half day and as you can see from the sweat on the top of johns head they got a good work out reelin' em in!

Winter Blue Sharks!
One shark after another kept these guys busy. As the trip winded down a hint of rain on the horizon working our way made it and easy decision to call it a day and we headed in.

Thanks for the pics Hodgie and we look foreward to fishing with you and John next winter!

Sage Xi3 being put to the test

I found Captain Trimble a few years ago after watching a TV show on fly fishing for sharks in Southern California in winter. I have been going out with him every December since then. Each trip I have taken has been outstanding. I always go in late December because my family leaves the cold of the east coast to head to San Diego for the holidays. Every trip we have caught lots of nice size Blue Sharks.

Sharky Dave, as my buddy and I call him, just knows where the sharks are and even when they should be hungry. This last trip he said that the winds should shift direction around 11:30AM and then the fishing should come on and sure enough we had our first hookup at 11:35 and the sharks stayed with us all afternoon.

A big blue comes to the boat

Each trip I’ve taken with Sharky Dave has resulted in 6 to 8 sharks per person per day. The sharks range in size from 30Lbs to well over 100Lbs. This last trip we hooked and landed what could have been a new record at over 160Lbs, but the shark broke the leader as we had him at the boat. Having fished for over 30 years all over the world, the thing that impresses me most about Sharky Dave is his dedication to conservation and fisheries management. He is all catch and release and he works hard to make sure these wonderful fish aren’t hurt when releasing them.

For anyone looking for a great fly fishing, or just plain great fishing experience, I highly recommend Capitan Dave Trimble. I can’t wait to come back one summer and try my hand at the big summer time Makos. See you soon.

Big Blue Shark and More!

While the San Diego bays are producing bass and halibut, Blue Shark fly fishing has been phenomenal for the month of February!

March 18, 2010 Fishing Report :

Blue Sharks, When Weather Permits!

The last week has been a mix of good fishing and big swell. Some of the trips we booked for shark fishing were canceled or changed to bay trips due to small craft advisories. Big swell and windy days are common in the Spring months.

Today's trip, however, could not have been better! The sun was out, the seas were flat, and the sharks were on the chew. Les and Debbie from Creative Castings came down to fish with Lou Galvan of Galvan Fly Reels. As a team, they managed to capture 8 nice blue sharks! The weather and lack of big swell was a great change from last week!

April 22, 2010 Report :

Rain & Weather Dominate

The chumming for sharks has been tough since our last report. Trolling for them, however, has been productive. The down side of that is that it virtually eliminates the shot of sticking one on a fly. I don't expect this to last long - May is usually a very productive month for sharking!

The local kelp beds have been productive some days for yellowtail, and barracuda, and I have seen some nice white seabass come in this past week.

The bay fishing has been productive in both bays - lots of bass, a few croaker, halibut and some barracuda.
